Mallorca Dream Road

The Mallorca Dream Road MA-10 takes you once straight across the World Heritage site. Enjoy the route—or at least watch the documentary on ARTE.

Once straight across the World Heritage site

Just read in the Mallorca Zeitung (source: mallorcazeitung.es, 27.03.22 11:48): the MA-10 on television. Of course, a documentary on ARTE.
Mallorca Dream Road Tramuntana MA-10 - we’re getting visitors
The MA-10 is Mallorca’s dream road for me. It runs from Port d´Andratx to Cap de Formentor, meaning it follows the entire UNESCO World Heritage Tramuntana mountain range.
One of the most beautiful roads in Europe. I’ve often driven the route starting from Soller; from there it was still about 60 kilometers to Pollença. Altogether, the route is about 140 kilometers.

Empty in summer?

I took the publication of this documentary as an opportunity to dig out a few photos from the summer before last, when we drove the route. Normally, the MA-10—at least the final section from Port de Pollença to Cap de Formentor—is closed in summer and only accessible by public transport. Corona had one advantage then: the island was almost unrealistically empty …
Allow plenty of time—the route drags on, because even experienced drivers can’t go particularly fast without endangering themselves and others. But as a pleasure drive, it’s absolutely first-class! Also watch out for road cyclists and motorcyclists; they often misjudge the curve radius on descents.
Mallorca Dream Road Tramuntana MA-10 - it winds along
You’ll have shady stretches of holm oak forest with damp road surfaces, dusty sections lying in the sun where cypresses and pines provide only insufficient shade over the roadway.
It’s almost like a little journey through climate zones that you can take on the MA-10. Be careful when the road is wet. With the little rain here and the type of road surface, especially the mountain sections quickly turn into quite slippery areas.

Is there anything to eat?

Hardly anything along the way. Of course in Soller, but that’s basically still too early. Then every now and then there’s a restaurant. At the monastery in LLuc you can choose between three eateries, although none of them is anything sensational. Ca´n Gallet has now been recommended to me twice, but I haven’t tried it myself. If you know it, please write your opinion in the comments. Or if you have other tips on where to stop for something good along the route.
Mallorca Dream Road - lighthouse Cap de Formentor
At Cap de Formentor there is a restaurant below the lighthouse where you can stop in. When I was there, however, it was closed. Please also bear in mind that the car park is, logically, limited in capacity. And the road there is, also logically, a dead end. So if you can’t park, you have to—whether you want to or not—drive back again.
Once you’ve driven the Mallorca Dream Road and finally arrived at Cap de Formentor, you absolutely have to take in the landscape from the terrace from different perspectives. And the sea. It’s truly sensational how light and shadow play here with rock and water!

When and where is the Mallorca Dream Road?

Arte is showing the documentary titled “Unterwegs auf Mallorca, Die MA-10” about this Mallorca dream road on Monday, 28.03.2022, at 16:55. You can also access it already in the Mediathek, as it is available there from today until 25.06.2022.
Note from 07.08.: Had to remove the link because on ARTE the documentary still shows up in the search, but then at some point an error message appears … If you click on Mediathek, search at the top with the magnifying glass for “Mallorca” … Hopefully it comes back
Be sure to watch the documentary about the Mallorca Dream Road. It’s a very different Mallorca. And anyone who has driven this Mallorca Dream Road won’t forget it anytime soon. I’ve never experienced such a variety of scenic appeal over such a short distance anywhere else. As I said, it’s a bit like traveling through different climate zones. Perhaps very roughly comparable to Portugal’s dream road along the Atlantic coast from Lisbon to Porto.
When I drove our MA-10 for the first time, I could only think: what luck it is to have such beautiful possibilities so close by and so easily accessible locally.
